Ever heard the phrase “buyer beware”? Well, you might be surprised to find out that shopping online is safer and more convenient that ever. Vendors are taking precautions to protect you, the buyer, and to ensure that you have an enjoyable and worry-free shopping experience. Here are some helpful tips to make sure you’re protected when you shop online:
1) Look for a secure logo or icon (i.e. Buyer Protection, Security Metrics, etc.). These symbols mean that the information you send during your purchase transaction (i.e. credit card information, name and address) are encrypted. You can usually find these logos at the bottom of the store home page or in the shopping cart during your checkout process.
2) Look for a plainly visible contact number. You always want to have the peace of mind that the
e-tailor you’re visiting is easy to contact, should the need arise. Clearly stated contact numbers should be offered, and established vendors will usually provide a toll free number for your convenience. Also, look for a mailing address for added reassurance.
3) Look for clearly stated shipping and handling. Make sure you know exactly what you are paying for shipping and handling charges. These costs should be displayed with the product or in the shopping cart during your check out process. This provides you with a complete cost, and helps to avoid sticker shock down the line. Some e-tailers(like most as seen on TV stores) even provide shipment tracking once your order has been mailed.
4) Look for clearly stated purchase policies. When you shop online, it’s important to know the rules for returns and exchanges. Make sure you’re informed and that the store has a section like FAQs or links to their purchase policy. This provides a certain reassurance, and from an e-tailor point of view, will increase the possibility that you become a repeat customer.
